These ladles fall between two projects I have worked on this year: ‘Tinker’ & ‘Family’. Tinker - simply made copper metal goods made in the ethos of a tinker who was a travelling tradesman and skilled maker. Tinkers coated their copper wares, traditionally in tin. In my work I have modified this and have coated mine in materials such as enamel and plastic. Family - this has been based upon looking to my family and the various making skills performed by different members. My Uncle has a dip coating factory. I think it’s interesting that me and my Uncle are able to perform the same processes, but in completely different contexts. One is a job within industry, the other is in a university. The idea that a tradesman’s skill is performed within university is a little odd to me.
So anyway, I made both of these ladles. I dip coated the black one in the workshop at uni. The other I took to my Uncle’s factory and he coated it for me, in the best shade of coral/red/pink/strawberry! His factory was great! The machines were fascinating and super colourful.

I’m going to be at New Designers next week. From Wednesday 4th until 7th of July.
Just doing a few last bits and bobs in preparation, our stand is looking like it will be really good. We have been putting together a newspaper with James Brown which will be free, come and get one if you fancy. We are the University of Brighton stand, F2.
